Fullster Iron Ltd. took on the high-stakes challenge of retrofitting the Shell Canada Energy Building into a fully functional fabrication facility, and they needed more than just strong design. They needed technology that could match their vision - tools that enabled collaboration, precision, and fast, informed decision-making at every phase.

As long-time users of STRUMIS and early adopters of our fabrication management tools, Fullster Iron Ltd. put our software suite to work and the results were award-winning.

A unique project called for innovative solutions

The project involved detailing, fabricating, installing, testing, and commissioning crane support structures and four overhead cranes. With a tight timeline and complex spatial constraints, Fullster’s team leaned into their digital toolbox from day one.

Brian Watson, President of Fullster Iron Ltd. and Project Manager:
"We had to do considerable design up front in order to bid. Keeping the amount of relocation of existing structural members and mechanical and electrical equipment to a minimum was critical."One of the early challenges was the special requirement to absolutely maximize the area of travel of the overhead cranes. It was akin to trying to stretch a cube in three dimensions without touching the perimeter."

Their solution? A brilliant structural approach using HSS tower columns recessed within the building’s frame, maximizing hook travel and eliminating the need for bulky horizontal trusses. But it wasn’t just structural design that made this a success technology played a vital role throughout.

Collaboration, precision & speed with STRUMIS + BIMReview

With deadlines looming and coordination essential, Fullster Iron Ltd. relied on STRUMIS and BIMReview to keep everyone aligned.

"Scheduling was also a major challenge on the project," says Watson. "The timeline was tight between the awarding of the bid to commissioning of the cranes. This meant we had to work as a team, share information and get approvals quickly at each step."

"I think the collaboration enabled by StruWalker (now BIMReview) and the thought given to identifying problems before they arose and identifying solutions made the project flow tremendously from start to finish."

STRUMIS helped streamline procurement, track production, and manage schedules across departments, ensuring that no time or steel MWas wasted.

"Fabrication of components throughout the project was also greatly enabled by the use of the STRUMIS system, which optimized the procurement and production process and assisted scheduling greatly."

From complex retrofits to high-output fabrication jobs, STRUMIS gives fabricators like Fullster Iron Ltd. the tools they need to innovate confidently and precisely.
